Here’s one of the scariest pictures I’ve ever seen.
It’s from 1923 and of Rubin Stacey, a lynching victim, hanging from a tree, surrounded by onlookers, including smiling girls, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
This photograph is mentioned in “The Pain We Still Need to Feel,” Jamelle Bouie’s article in Slate about the just-opened National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Everyone should read the article and visit the memorial website if not the actual memorial and remember what inhumanity we are capable of. Let’s not go here ever again, shall we?
